Research shows vaping improves heart functions damaged by smoking

Scientists now confirm that switching to vaping produces none of the adverse health effects on the heart compared to smoking.  In fact, smokers begin experiencing negative consequences on the myocardial system almost immediately after smoking a single cigarette.  The research also shows that smoking instantly produces significant changes to diastolic functions, or the ways in which the cardiovascular muscles expand and contract.  Switching to vaping has an almost immediate positive effect.

The study entitled Acute effects of using an electronic nicotine-delivery device (electronic cigarette) on myocardial function: comparison with the effects of regular cigarettes was conducted by a group of European researchers.  The findings are located on the medical journal BMC Cardiovascular Disorders.  By monitoring a control group of 81 participants consisting of both only-vapers and only-smokers, the research team came to the following conclusion.

"This is the first study to examine the acute effects of electronic cigarette use on myocardial function. No adverse effects on LV [left ventricular] myocardial function were observed after using electronic cigarette with nicotine-containing liquid for 7 minutes. On the contrary, significant changes in diastolic function parameters were found after smoking 1 tobacco cigarette."

"This study provides the first clinical evidence that electronic cigarettes have less acute adverse effects on myocardial function when compared to tobacco cigarettes."

The scientists began by monitoring an extensive list of myocardial functions among both groups of participants.  Dual usage was strictly forbidden.  Of the 81 original members, 76 managed to complete the trial successfully.

  • 36 participants were smokers (32 male and 4 female).
  • 40 participants were vapers (36 male and 4 female).
  • The average ages were 35 for vapers and 33 for smokers.
  • All participants had multi-year histories of daily, heavy smoking.
  • The vaping-only group were then asked to switch to vaping for the course of the trail.
  • Vaping participants were given identical vaping equipment and e-liquids (7ml nicotine concentration).
  • Cardiovascular functions monitored for comparable analysis included but were not limited to the following.
    • Standing Heart Rate
    • Standing Blood Pressure
    • Systolic Blood Pressure
    • Diastolic Blood Pressure
    • Triglyceride, Glucose and Cholesterol levels
    • Left ventricle (LV) Mass Index
    • Left ventricle (LV) Diameter
    • Isovolumetric relaxation time (IVRT)
    • IVRT corrected to heart rate (IVRTc)
    • Myocardial performance index

What the medical team determined is that in all categories, no adverse health effects were detectable among the vaping-only group.  Meanwhile, the smokers experienced negative health effects almost immediately after smoking a single cigarette in a controlled laboratory environment.  Led by Dr. Konstantinos E Farsalinos of the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center in Kallithéa, Greece, the study’s findings are in direct contradiction to previous claims made by the American Lung Association (ALA).

"I think there’s still a perception that e-cigarettes are less harmful than regular cigarettes and so for some kids who never would have tried smoking cigarettes they get the idea this might be a safer alternative."

The above statement was made by a representative of the Wisconsin chapter of the ALA to WPR News.  It is also proof that a disinformation campaign in underway that attempts to intentionally and wrongly convince millions of smokers that vaping is just as dangerous to one’s health as smoking.  The Farsalinos research is just one of the many reputable studies which refute these outrageous assertions.
